Landlord strategy

Turn twenty cards into a finish

The landlord starts with one extra card, the bottom cards, and the first lead. The challenge is converting that advantage into a controlled finish before the farmers cooperate.

Plan after the bottom cards

  • Identify the new pairs, triples, bombs, and sequences.
  • Choose a final two-play or three-play shape.
  • Decide which control card must be saved for the final transition.
  • Do not commit to a plan before revealing all three bottom cards.

Keep farmers separated

Farmers are strongest when one feeds the other. Lead patterns that force one farmer to spend a high card while the other cannot help. Avoid low pairs that a teammate can conveniently answer.

Manage high cards

  • Use lower controls before higher controls when both achieve the same goal.
  • Save a joker or 2 for the turn before your final hand shape.
  • Do not split a rocket for two ordinary singles unless the position demands it.

When to use a bomb

A bomb is valuable when it changes control and the resulting lead moves you toward the finish. If using it only delays the inevitable, pass and keep the multiplier lower.

Recognize farmer danger

  • If a farmer has one or two cards, block their next response.
  • If both farmers are passing, lead the structure that removes the most cards.
  • If a farmer is saving a bomb, do not assume a low control card is safe.
The landlord's biggest advantage is information from the bottom cards and first lead. Use it to shape the round, not just to play the lowest card.
